It’s official! After a comprehensive search, The Society for the Appreciation of Depressing Christmas Music, International has named “Prison Graveyard Christmas” by Geezer Senior as the most depressing Christmas song of all time!
The competition was fierce. There are more intensely depressing Christmas songs than you may realize. The average older listener may remember John Denver’s “Daddy, Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas.” And, if you hadn’t listened to the Staple Singer’s “Who Took the Merry Out of Christmas?” you probably should. There’s also a solid argument that every Christmas song by Pariah Scary is an extreme bring down, but this isn’t the place…..
What would be the most depressing place to spend Christmas? It’d probably have to be jail. Surprisingly, there are several Christmas songs set in prison. “Christmas in Jail” by the Youngsters, “Christmas in Prison” by Doug Legacy and the Legends of the West, and, of course, John Prine’s “Christmas in Prison.” These songs are very depressing.
